Craig Nickson is an experienced Grade A Approved Driving Instructor and specialist driving instructor trainer with over 26 years in the driver training industry. His background includes advanced driver training, instructor development and emergency response driver training, including experience as a former police advanced driving instructor. Craig holds a Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training and has extensive experience developing PDIs and ADIs for qualification, Standards Checks and continued professional development. His training approach is practical, client-centred and reflective, helping instructors develop stronger coaching, risk management, lesson planning and instructional skills while building confidence, independence and professional competence.

Session Description

Motorway driving demands a higher level of judgement, anticipation and decision-making. This rare industry masterclass is designed to give instructors the knowledge, confidence and practical coaching techniques to deliver high-quality motorway tuition — from supporting a learner’s first motorway experience to developing a newly qualified driver’s skills post-test. 
You’ll gain clear strategies for joining and leaving safely, matching speed, using acceleration and deceleration lanes, maintaining effective lane discipline, overtaking and changing lanes safely. You’ll also explore how to develop stronger observation and planning, helping pupils read traffic flow, signs, road markings and gantries earlier and recognise hazards before they become critical. 
 
The session focuses on speed, space and risk management at higher speeds, including following distances, changing weather and traffic conditions, and understanding how quickly situations can develop. You’ll learn how to turn these principles into effective coaching, with practical ways to explain, demonstrate and support pupils according to their individual ability and confidence.
