Bio
Ray Seagrave is a Grade A Approved Driving Instructor and Grade A ORDIT-registered trainer, accredited coach and mentor, author and national speaker. He has spent more than 16 years working in driver and instructor training, supporting PDIs and ADIs to develop client-centred teaching, coaching, communication and risk-management skills. Ray is the author of The Driving Instructor’s Ultimate Guide to Coaching Questions and The Driving Instructor’s Ultimate Guide to Client-Centred Lessons. His practical training focuses on helping instructors make better decisions in real lessons, balancing safety, learning and learner responsibility, with particular emphasis on behaviour, reflection and safe driving for life.
Five key takeaways delegates will get:
A clearer understanding of proactive, supportive and reactive risk management.
How to judge when to step in, when to support and when to step back.
How to balance learner responsibility with the instructor’s duty to manage safety.
How teaching, coaching, feedback and reflection can support effective risk management.
How to recognise over-instruction, under-instruction and situations where risk is building before it becomes safety-critical.
Session Description
Effective risk management is about much more than spotting hazards or stepping in when something goes wrong. It depends on a range of instructor skills, including observation, anticipation, judgement, communication, adaptation, intervention and reflection.
In this two-hour masterclass, Ray explores how instructors can balance safety with learning, giving learners enough responsibility to develop while still knowing when to support, prompt, intervene or take control.
The session looks at proactive, supportive and reactive risk management, how responsibility can be shared, and how instructor input should change as situations develop. It also considers the role of teaching, coaching, feedback and reflection within effective risk management.
Sometimes the learner needs space to think. Sometimes they need guidance. Sometimes they need a clear instruction. The skill is recognising what is needed, and when.
Using practical lesson examples, Ray will explore common risk-management weaknesses, the dangers of over-instruction and under-instruction, and how instructors can manage challenge without either removing useful learning opportunities or allowing risk to build unnecessarily.
Can’t fault it - fantastic content. Passionate speakers. I genuinely appreciated all of the talks. Knowing that the presenter slides and a recording would be shared allowed me to focus more on listening and engaging, rather than worrying about taking extensive notes—such a smart approach.
The recent Zoom session organised by Intelligent Instructor and hosted by Dr Julia Malkin on an Introduction to Autistic and ADHD pupils was fascinating. I also gained more knowledge/understanding on how to help pupils who have been diagnosed, and help them believe in themselves in tiny manageable steps.
...Now that I’m a little more established I still return again & again to their website and sign up to their resources and ace events for the benefit of my own continued personal and professional development. An industry must for both PDI and ADI alike. Long live Intelligent Instructor!! 🤜🏻🤛🏻
